2009 Summer Plant Skills Expedition
Two sections from which to choose: June 6th or June 7th
Join Briar Patch Outdoors and The Mustard Seed for an all day exploration of the useful plant life of the Great Lakes. This will be held at our new location off of exit 59 of Highway 131, between Kalamazoo and Grand Rapids Michigan. We will investigate upland hardwoods, lakeshore, field edge, and even tall grass prairie ecosystems. Dozens and dozens of plant species will be identified and their uses will be examined (edible, medicinal, poison, and utility).
The day will be capped off by a multi-course meal, composed mainly of wild plants we identify and harvest during our hike. Campfire cooking methods will also be demonstrated. We will all have a healthy appetite by the end of the day!
What to bring
We will be outside all day, so be practical. Wear durable, comfortable clothes and shoes. Feel free to bring cameras and notebooks, as well as plant ID books. Bring a daypack, water bottle, a bowl and cup, and a pocketknife. You may be asked to carry a bit of class gear.
The class costs $125 per adult pupil; those under 16 are half price. We are asking for a deposit of $60 per participant. Contact us ASAP to register.
