Land Navigation - Part Three

by Keith A. "Bootlegger" Williams

As you can see, there are many different varieties of compasses. Some are fairly basic, and some are more sophisticated, but all work in essentially the same way.

(Note: One thing you should be aware of is that you must keep a compass away from any electrical or metal objects in order to maintain accurate readings, as these can cause the arrow to give false readings.)

Map orientation with a compass.

When asked about knowledge of a compass, many people respond that a compass points out the Northern direction, and while this is true, a compass can do much more. In fact, in the hands of someone who is skilled in its usage, a compass can not only tell you the direction that you are facing, it can give you precise directions to get to a desired location. To use a compass most effectively, it is best to pair it with a topographical map. The first step in doing this is to orient the map so that its layout is the same as the landscape in the surrounding area. To do this, place the compass base plate along the True North line on the map's declination diagram or vertical grid line.
