Maine Coastal Survival and Foraging Trip (Part 4)

by George Hedgepeth

The animal foods we found were even more exciting to someone from near the middle of the continent. Millions of Blue Mussels were found clustered on the rocks. The mats of Bladder Wrack were crawling with small Whelks and Periwinkles, and below them were three species of Crabs. None of these were very large, but all species are edible.

Sandy areas between the rocks held lovely little Butter Clams, which were easily dug out of the sand with a spade made from a piece of driftwood. They were as good as any seafood I have ever eaten!

The tide pools in the rocky areas held more Crabs, Urchins, Limpets, Slipper Shells, as well as the occasional shrimp. These were generally quite small - about 3" from tail to eye or so. Although they were not large, they were certainly delicious! Washed up on the shore was plentiful evidence of deeper water life too, like scallops and lobster. We never found any of these creatures, but we certainly looked for them.
